Ginette Hersch (nee Wagner) lived in a tradition Jewish home in Dijon. There, her parents owned a clothing store.

On the day the Germans occupied Paris, her family fled to Toulouse.

In 1942, her father was arrested because he was Russian. Later, he was released with orders for him to report to the authorities with his family. Instead, her parents hid with friends, while she was sent to a boarding school and her brother to hide in a monastery. Then, her family fled to Voirons.

In Voirons, the family hid in caves and basements, where they were helped by an elderly French woman who had one son in the underground.

She and her family were liberated by American troops in August, 1944. Ginette emigrated with her family to the United States in May 1950.
