Yetti Sterensis (nee Straucher) was born in Lwow, Poland. She grew up in a traditional Jewish family and had one brother.

In 1941, she and her family were forced to moved into the Lwow Ghetto and lived there until 1942. Her parents and brother were shot and buried in a mass grave.

In the ghetto, Yetti was helped by a German soldier to get papers with a Christian identity. She then signed up for voluntary labor and traveled for five days to Greitz Turrenger in Germany. There she worked in a munitions factory with about ten other Jewish girls posing as Gentiles.

In May 1945, she was liberated by the American Army. She married another survivor shortly after.

She emigrated to the United States in April, 1948.
