Phil Gans was born in 1928 in Amsterdam. After Germany invaded Holland, his family went into hiding but they were eventually arrested. Phil is a survivor of several camps, including Auschwitz III (Buna-Monowitz) and Flossenburg. He participated in the death march before the U.S. Army liberated him on April 23, 1945. He was 17 at the time of liberation.

In the two clips, Phil speaks about the initial selection after arriving at Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) and being sent to Auschwitz III. He also leaves a message for young generations about the importance of hope and encourages young people to be upstanders rather than bystanders.
