Nechama was born in Lublin, Poland. She enjoyed a comfortable life and studied with a tutor. When the war broke out, her father was forced to turn his business over to a non-Jew, and the family paid to hide with a Polish family in Kielce, Poland. After the war, Nechama married and came to the United States so her husband could study medicine. They remained in the United States, and Nechama earned her doctorate in sociology. She is a professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut and has written her autobiography and several monographs on topics dealing with the Holocaust. As a recognized Holocaust scholar, she speaks to communities throughout the United States and has just been appointed to the Council of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museums.
