Ephraim Moses Lilien, The Wailing Wall,
ca. 1908-1919, in Jerusalem (New York: Ktav Publishing House, 1976),
p. 47.

Lillien was famous for his photography in
turn of the century Palestine as well as his lamentation works, often
in art nouveau style "The Wailing Wall" shows the Western Wall
of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, a holy site for Jews since the destruction
of the Temple in 70CE. The wall stood across from housing in a narrow
street until after the 1967 Six Day war. The Hebrew text on the wall,
placed by pilgrims, is now obliterated., The face of the man in the
foreground suggests joy at being able to see and pray at the wall, the
last symbol of Jewish independence.
