Edie L.
|
|
Edie was born in Darmstadt, Germany. As a young child, she enjoyed a comfortable
life. Her father owned an iron and steel company, and the family lived
in an apartment building which they owned. When Edie was about four, her
sister, Marion, was born, and when she was six she began attending public
school. After Hitler came to power in 1933, Edie’s life changed.
She had to attend a Jewish school and experienced antisemitism from former
non-Jewish friends. She also witnessed how the Hitler Youth harassed Jewish
youth. Edie’s family managed to get out of Germany in April 1938
and resettled in Chicago where her mother began a restaurant. Edie’s
uncle refused to leave Germany with Edie’s family and was sent to
Auschwitz during the war years. Today, Edie lives in St. Petersburg, Florida
and speaks with school children at the Florida Holocaust Museum about her
experiences
growing up in Nazi Germany.
