Freedom Riders – Pardoll Family Lecture Series

Featuring Bernard LaFayette, civil rights activist from Tampa who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and participated in the Freedom Rides in 1961, and Ray Arsenault, USF St. Petersburg professor and award-winning author of Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice.

Bernard LaFayette, Jr. has been a Civil Rights Movement activist, minister, educator, lecturer and authority on nonviolent social change. He co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960. He was a leader of the Nashville Movement in 1960, the Freedom Rides in 1961 and the Selma Movement in 1965. He directed the Alabama Voter Registration Project in 1962, and was appointed National Program Administrator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and National Coordinator of the 1968 Poor People’s campaign by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. LaFayette has served as director of Peace and Justice in Latin America; Chairperson of the Consortium on Peace Research, Education and Development; Director of the PUSH Excel Institute; and minister of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Tusjegee, Alabama.
