She and her brother lived in England in several boarding schools and private family homes before being reunited with their parents. Her father escaped to England in June 1939 where he was classified as an enemy alien and spent two years in an internment camp on the Isle of Man. In May 1940, Lisl’s mother found passage on the last ship that sailed from Italy to New York City. Finally, after a six-year separation, the family was reunited in New York City in January 1945.
